Peepers has an amazing rescue story!
Peepers was rescued after flying into a window opposite a fig tree containing flying foxes.
He was taken to the Sydney Wildlife Rescue Mobile Care Unit and given a full assessment by the vet including bloods & X-rays.
He suffered a semi detached retina in right eye, ulceration of both eyes and soft tissue injury.
He received specialist ophthalmology vet care & his treatment plan included pain relief and eye treatments whilst in the care of Sydney Wildlife, then flight reconditioning, physiotherapy and release.
Angela photographed Peepers just before he was moved to his pre-release aviary. Using natural available light, never flash, which is especially important for nocturnal birds.
Window strikes are on the increase for Powerful owls likely due to the encroachment of residential development into bushland.BirdLife Australia currently has a 'Bird strike project', where you can view various info and fact sheets on how to make windows safe for birds & what to do if you find a concussed bird:www.birdsinbackyards.net/getinvolved/Bird-Strike-Project
Peepers was a finalist in the 2025 Inner-west Council Greenway Art Prize.
