This Willie Wagtail is a sub-adult and was spotted locally by Angela, hanging outside the shopping Centre!
Although willie they are usually seen alone or in pairs, they often form family groups of adults and offspring. They are extremely territorial and will harass other birds– even those much larger than themselves, this local takes on the Currawongs!
Willie wagtails wag their tails for a combination of feeding and communication purposes, primarily to flush out hidden insects while foraging on the ground. Other theories suggest it may be a signal to potential predators that the bird is alert and healthy, or to other birds as a sign of submission
Indigenous Australians believe the Willie Wagtail to be a gossiper who eavesdropped around the camps. In the Kimberley in Western Australia, legend has it that the birds would tell the spirit of the dead if anyone spoke badly of them.
